Vinyl Replacement Window Installation Procedure
Finally it is the right time to install new windows. You need to put the window into the opening to make sure it’s going to fit, then remove it and run a bead of caulk on the face of the outside blind stop where the window will rest. It wouldn’t be good if you found out the windows were too large after you have already caulked. It’s worth the extra time, which is a matter of a few minutes, to ensure a proper fit. Lift the window and set the bottom in first. Raise the top until it presses against the outer blind stops. Once you determine that it’s going to fit, remove the new window and set it aside. Run a bead of caulk for your replacement window on the face of the outer blind stops. White latex painters caulk works fine. Lift the window back to where it was in the proper position. Now have your helper hold the window in position while you raise and lower the sashes, making certain that the window is square in the opening. Go to the nearby grocery store and buy a box of popsicle sticks and some wooden coffee stirrers. Before installing the inside stops, caulk the gap on both sides and along the top. The bottom center and the top center should be screwed securely while not applying any on the sides. Installing the shims will eliminate side-to-side movement, and the caulk on the blind stops will help keep the frame in place, so there is really no need to use any screws.
Replace the old nails with news ones before installing the inside stops. You can use a one and a quarter inch finish nail. Prior to installing the stops internally, scrape off the caulk off the main stops. Nail your stops while the helper is holding the windows in the desired place If the window has 4 stops, install the shortest ones first. That way you can bend the longer stops into place between the two short ones. Use a nail punch to sink the head past the surface of the stop. If you have several windows to do, i suggest doing the first window to this point before going to the next. How frustrating would it be to have a helper removing the old sashes, only to discover that the windows aren’t going to fit!Why? If the first one goes in fine, then you can send your helper ahead of you to start removing old sashes. One of the most common mistakes of replacement windows is getting the measurements incorrectly, proper measurement is important to avoid having windows that do not fit. Be sure that you measure the window dimensions exactly and then subtract one fourth an inch from each of the dimensions. To finish, caulk where the inside stop meets the casing as well as where it meets new the frame. Fill the nail holes in the inside stops with caulk to hide the nail heads. Now it’s time to finish the outside. A quality replacement window will match the sloped sill, or come with an insert that fits under the sloping wood sill. Lower grade windows may not come with anything to fill the gap underneath, so if you have bought one such window then you can buy some wood trim to fill the space or you can buy some flat vinyl trim that attaches to the face of the bottom of the new frame. To find flat trim, search the web or go to a local building supply store. After covering the bottom gap, apply caulk to where the outside blind stops meet the vinyl frame and to where the bottom gap filler meets the wood sill.
